A daring bank robbery leaves one robber wounded and the bank manager dead. Sticking to their original plan, the two robbers leave town separately to allay suspicions, planning to rendezvous in the nearby forest and split the loot. But even the best of plans can go awry. A young farmer out hunting mistakes the wounded robber for a wild animal and accidentally kills him. While searching through the dead man's belongings, he comes across the money from the robbery and decides to keep it for himself. But when the second robber spots his partner's horse at the farmer's homestead, he confronts the farmer, determined to get his money back. The farmer proves to be more resilient than expected and fights back. His courage and resolve force the bank robber to escalate his efforts and finally risk it all in a face-to-face shootout! 1. Young Ray Elliott comes of age in the South during segregation enforced by Jim Crow laws. The murder of a leading citizen presents him a series of fateful decisions, turning a hard scrabble farmer's future like a kaleidoscope. He makes a fateful promise to protect a fugitive from lynching, whatever the cost.Meanwhile, bank president Richard Watersong uses the distraction of his father-in-law's murder to embezzle money and abscond to Cuba with a pregnant girl named Queen. His disgraced wife Eleanor raises their children and rebuilds the bank. She asks Ray Elliott-now a Texas Ranger-to find her husband, throwing herself at the lawman, but shame over his deceit drives him from her.The failed paths of these characters' broken lives bring them together decades later to contest ownership of two hundred acres in the heart of the Great East Texas Oilfield. Cross-examination in a climatic courtroom confrontation unveils the true murderer, but the genuine challenge is whether any of the characters can put the pieces of their lives together to achieve redemption.

The grain banking model

Diploma Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1,3, European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) (Europa-Universität Viadrina / Reims Management School), language: English, abstract: The rural sector in development countries is characterized by high covariant risk, high client dispersion and lack of suitable collateral. These problems lead to high information asymmetry within the agricultural lending process. Because information is incomplete agricultural lending is costly. Consequently many micro finance institutions (MFIs) have concentrated their branches and activities in urban areas. Therefore scepticism is growing about their role in mobilising rural savings and offering rural lending services. Financial cooperatives demanding compulsory savings and enforcing group lending schemes are able to reduce information asymmetry and hence transaction costs of agricultural lending. Since the financial cooperative follows a minimalist approach, it does not offer non-financial services such as storage facilities, training in farming techniques or the treatment of agricultural produce. In order to enhance clients' ability to utilize credit, and thereby to improve their repayment rates, an MFI should follow the integrated approach. The MFI with an integrated approach offers credit combined with non-financial services. The grain bank is seen as a financial institution which links products and services of the financial cooperative with those of the integrated approach. The grain bank replaces physical cash with grains and farm inputs. Six main products are offered by the grain bank: savings in grain, input credit, inventory credit, household food security loan, storage services and training services. Further the grain bank provides access to input and output markets otherwise not available for the farmer. The Ghanaian 'Centre for Agriculture and Rural Development' (CARD) is such a grain bank. The results show that CARD has a better financial sustainability than other Ghanaian MFIs not operating as a grain bank. Although the study reveals that the outreach of CARD is not as encouraging as assumed, the clients seem to be satisfied with the services received by CARD. At the same time the results of the econometric analysis indicate that the provision of credit supplied by CARD increases farmer's output with potential effects on income.

Poet Matlin's debut novel - set in the 40's and early 50's on the southern California chaparral close to the Mohave Desert - brings to life a Jewish family who raise roses and a Kiowa Okie who serves as a memory bank for Indian and local lore. Tom Green, the Kiowa Okie, knows how to irrigate, and so he helps the immigrant Jews, even though 'In the local papers the local people complained about the herd of Jews being kept there.' Like the Jews, who hire concentration camp survivors and live almost as much in the spirit of their racial history as they do on their farm, Green - who's in love with Anna, an old actress - is a repository of history. The book, narrated mostly by one of the Jewish farmer's children, juxtaposes the two very different sorts of history, textures the narrative with atmospheric detail, and brings all the various tribes together at the end for the Rancho ride - a great ritual and an occasion for celebration. Matlin takes us along via the farmer's son to explore the chaparral in late August, the Santa Arm winds ('Once the wind gets into a house there was no telling what it or the things it carried might do'), and earthquakes, landslides, bougainvillea, rains, the method of packing a tractor-trailer, and the seasonal vicissitudes of growing roses and growing up. Green's story, on the other hand, is about poverty, day-to-day survival, drugs, and, more pleasantly, his line of 'Butterfly Dreamers' - women who prophesy the future from the whisper of the insects' wings. This has as much to do with history as with fiction (Matlin also packs in an essay on rose tending from ancient times to the present), but its sense of place is dead to rights. Short on plot and character, then, but with narrative charms that more than compensate. (Kirkus Reviews)
